Administration
Gretchen Reiss
It is my honor to serve as the principal of Robert L. Patton High School I look forward to working with the parents, staff, and community to enrich the lives of our students. For most of my life, I have lived in Burke County. I graduated from Lenior-Rhyne University in 1995 with a bachelor’s in elementary education. I completed my Master’s Degree in Reading in 2000 and my add-on administrative certificate in 2018 from Appalachian State University. My teaching experience was at Drexel Elementary for over 22 years. I began my administration career at Jimmy C. Draughn High School, serving as the curriculum assistant principal for four years. I served as principal at George Hildebrand Elementary for three years.
Education is significant to me and was instilled in me at a young age. I always wanted to be a teacher, like my mother. I was the little girl who played “school” and could not wait until teaching became a reality. As a teacher, I dedicated myself to making learning come alive through hands-on, active instruction. I loved watching young students discover the foundational skills of reading and mathematics. My passion is to give students the tools they need to be successful - academically, socially, and emotionally. I believe in high time on task and student-centered learning. It is my desire for parents, students, and staff to feel welcome when they enter our school.
My rotten four-legged golden retriever daughter, London Elizabeth, and I enjoy walks through Valdese, Morganton, and local dog parks. I love spending time with friends, traveling, decorating, baking, and reading.
I am enthusiastic about this opportunity to serve the students, parents, and community in this role as principal. I am a believer in teamwork and collaboration. It truly takes a village to provide the best learning opportunities. If you have any questions or concerns, please call or email me greiss@burke.k12.nc.us. Go Panthers!
